Khatgal Village & The Western Shore

The Khyasaa Mountain Ascent

If you are arriving by private vehicle—or seeking a much more demanding trek—we highly recommend crossing over to the lake's western shore to journey up Khyasaa Mountain. The ascent is notoriously challenging for cars, but the sweeping, uninterrupted views from the summit are spectacular.

Sukhbaatar Ship Museum & The Local Market

While on the western shore, spend a few hours in Khatgal village to anchor yourself in the region's history. Begin by exploring Khuvsgul's naval past at the Sukhbaatar ship museum, then wander through the local market. Our region is famous for its wild-harvested provisions—we highly recommend picking up fresh smoked or preserved lake fish, along with jars of local bilberry and lingonberry jams. The market is also an excellent place to source premium Mongolian pine nuts, or to bring home traditional dairy you will experience during your time in Mongolia, such as thick clotted cream and aaruul (dried curds).

At Your Own Pace: Peninsula Leisure

Kayaking

The lake is at its most beautiful during the still hours of early morning or right at sunset, offering a quiet, private vantage point of the taiga. However, kayaking doesn't have to be purely meditative—taking the boats out with friends after a leisurely meal is a wonderfully relaxed, playful way to experience the water together.

Quiet Walks & The Shoreline

Step straight from your door onto the gentler trails of our peninsula. For a meditative reset, simply walk the quiet shoreline to clear your thoughts. In the height of summer, the sun lingers until 9:00 PM or later, making an evening stroll along the water a deeply cleansing experience accompanied by long, golden light. It is an effortless way to ground yourself in the landscape without the demands of a steep climb.

Peninsula Hikes & Mergen Mountain

For a more structured route, we offer guided hikes to curated scenic vantage points. If you are looking for true elevation, the climb up Mergen Mountain is highly rewarding and best experienced just before sunset.

Peninsula Picnics & Rest

Secluded picnic spots are scattered throughout the peninsula. Bring a blanket and some provisions to read to a loved one, play a quiet game of cards, or—after a gentle morning walking the trails—indulge in a delicious afternoon nap in the shade of the trees. It is an invitation to slow down and experience an older, simpler way of life.

The Sauna

After a long day of climbing Mergen Mountain, riding through the taiga, or driving up Khyasaa, retreat to the sauna. Deep heat, steam, and silence to restore tired muscles and prepare you for the evening.

Notes for the Capital: Ulaanbaatar

Many guests ask us where to experience traditional arts and source local goods. While the Mergen Peninsula is a place of natural silence and outdoor exploration, Ulaanbaatar is the true hub for heritage showcases and fine textiles. We highly recommend saving these experiences for your days in the capital:

The Traditional Arts

The Tumen Ekh Ensemble (near the National Amusement Park) and the Tsagaan Lavai Ensemble offer world-class, authentic performances of Khoomii (throat singing), contortionism, and vibrant Tsam dances.

Mongolian Cashmere

Ulaanbaatar is home to some of the world's finest cashmere. Dedicate an afternoon in the city to explore the flagship boutiques at the Galleria Ulaanbaatar or the historic State Department Store before making your way to the countryside.
